How can acupuncture and Chinese herb medicine help infertility?
Chinese medical and skin centre Acupuncture (from Lat. Acus, “needle” (noun) and pungere, “prick” (verb) is a technique of inserting and manipulating filiform needles into acupuncture points on the body.. Based on the archaeological evidence, it is believed that the earliest precedents of acupuncture dated back as 1000 BC.
Treats the human body as a whole that involves the system of meridians and collaterals. They are pathways that carry qi (viatl energy produced “chee”), blood and body fluid around the body. All the internal organs, apertures, skin and hair, tendons and muscles, bones and other tissue in the human body rely on the communication through the meridians, to form an integrated and unified organism. Practitioners will choose a combination of points to achieve the desired effect. The choice is guided by long standing formulae, modified to suit each individual problem.
Acupuncture for reproductive medicine is complex as the diagnosed condition may involve more than one organ system. This means that acupuncture points relating to different organs systems will need to be carefully chosen collectively to address the imbalances of energy flow in these systems. Modern research have found acupuncture can enhance the chances of IVF and increase blood flow in uterus (see research page for more details)
The herbal medicine developed by Chinese physicians through the centuries help women enhance their reproductive potential by harmonising the endocrine system, which regulates the menstrual cycle.
The effects of the herbs vary. They may act on the ovulatory phase: they may regulate the secretion of mucus; they may stimulate the uterus; or they may assist in the production of adequate progesterone. For example, many Chinese herbs that produce phytoestrongenic activity also act on the ovaries, while they impact on the central nervous system. Because it affects many different many different parts of the body's own natural processes, herbal medicine is a gentler, more organic response to fertility problems.
Every herb has its own characteristics and effects and combining different herbs helps to increase their potency and minimise any unwanted consequences. Rather like a football team working together to strike, defend and score goals, the herbs work together to achieve maximum benefit for clients. The basic formulae are often modified slightly according to the person concerned and their problem.

Women undergoing fertility treatment could have their chances of success boosted by acupuncture. German researchers said they have increased success rates by almost 50% in women having in vitro fertilisation (IVF)
A report published in the journal. Fertility and sterility found the pregnancy rate in the group was 42.5% compared to the group, which did not receive therapy, where the rate was 26.3%.
Women who receive acupuncture during the stimulation phase of an in vitro fertilization cycle and again immediately after embryo transfers have a higher live-birth rate than do controls.
